IHS Towers is the largest telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, with over 23,300 towers in its portfolio. IHS currently operates in Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Rwanda and Zambia and is investing in renewable power solutions to both improve energy and operational efficiencies, and reduce the environmental impact of its operations. IHS has set itself the target of becoming largely diesel-neutral through a combination of on and off-grid solutions. Over the next few years, IHS plans to become almost diesel neutral across its Zambian portfolio and the company is assessing solar farm opportunities in Rwanda that could potentially supply power to the national grid in the first ‘energy swap’ model to be used in Africa. To date, IHS has invested over US$500 million in new green energy power systems across its portfolio. IHS is achieving its renewable energy goals whilst integrating newly acquired towers into its network. At the same time, IHS is maintaining network uptime of over 99% in all of its five markets, with all tower sites connected to IHS’s Network Operating Centres so that they can be monitored 24/7.
