What does a successful wellness programme look like?

Report Summary

As US employers grapple with rising healthcare costs, many have established employee wellness programmes. Yet companies continue to struggle with low employee engagement and health ownership. In May 2014 The Economist Intelligence Unit conducted an employer and employee survey, sponsored by Humana, to explore the extent to which employers use health-related employee data to guide the operation and outcomes measurement of US wellness programmes.

Key findings

  • Beyond ROI: Wellness programmes can be part of a progressive HR strategy to make the organisation an employer of choice.
  • Better data collection is needed, but what to do with it? Employers struggle to interpret the data they have and they lack sufficient insights to assess key programme objectives.
  • Leading obstacles to participation in wellness programmes are insufficient time and privacy concerns, employees say.
